About WV Healthy Kids

Health educators from West Virginia University (WVU) in collaboration with the WV CARDIAC Project and under the guidance of the WVU School of Medicine and the College of Applied Human Sciences developed a virtual lesson emphasizing physical activity, proper nutrition, and their impact on overall health. Designed specifically for students in grades 5 through 8, these lessons can be completed in the classroom or at home and serve as an excellent supplement to health and wellness programming.

Objective

  • Extend the educational module to students in all counties withing WV by creating a web-based version.
  • Create a custom website application where students can complete the curriculum online.
  • Develop a registration page that does not require collecting student personal information or creating accounts.
  • Provide access to engaging lessons on nutrition, physical activity, and overall health.
  • Develop a final survey for students to complete upon finishing all three lessons.
  • Provide ability for site administrators to view data and assess effectiveness of online module.

ACI Approach

ACI developed a custom website for the WV Healthy Kids using Flask, Python, MySQL, HTML, and CSS. This tailored solution was designed to meet the client’s goals, including providing access to content without full registration, eliminating the need for teacher accounts, and allowing students full flexibility in how they are navigating through all the lessons.

To ensure the design met the client’s goals, multiple prototypes were created and presented to the WVU team. Once the new layout was created, ACI populated the site with the interactive curriculum and designed the backend database used to store student responses. ACI provides hosting and maintenance as needed.
